iPhone-Optimized Baseball Scores and Stats

Pickleview featuring MLB ScoresIt’s baseball season again, and we all need a way to get the latest scores and stats on our iPhones. Here are some iPhone- and iPod Touch-optimized ways of getting baseball info. Our featured site is Pickleview, but we’ve also listed our entire collection, so you can choose one that’s right for you.

SmallStarPickleview - Follow your favorite team pitch by pitch. Shows small pictures and stats of players on the base path when they’re at bat or when they reach a base. The bottom of the screen features play-by-play text descriptions, or you can choose to Twitter about the game with your friends.

Others:

ESPN Mobile MLB - Scores and that’s about it. Very limited information.

Live Stats Tracker - Keep track of your fantasy players. One-time set up. Add your individual players, and each time you revisit the site, your players’ latest stats will appear.

MLB.com Mobile - Official site of Major League Baseball in mobile form. Very ugly but offers the most information (particularly, individual stats) of all the links.

Pro Baseball - Baseball scores on your iPhone. Good looking, lots of information, but a little buggy (pitchers currently appear in incorrect order in box scores).

ScoreMobile MLB - Clean interface, but features only scores and limited stats.

SmallStarSportsTap MLB - Scores, stats, standings, and transactions. Displays full box scores. Good looking site.

Yahoo Mobile MLB Scores - News and scores from Yahoo.

There are also a few alternative methods to get baseball scores on your iPhone. One is to send an SMS text message with the words score and Red Sox (or your favorite team) to Google at 46645, and they will send back a score. You can also have Yahoo Alerts send you a text message when a game featuring your favorite team starts, every 3 innings, or when the game ends.

Update to A World of iPhone Links

Small Earth

A small update to the A World of iPhone Links page today. There’s a lot of awful iPhone-optimized sites out there, so I try to cull through the trash for the relatively useful. Enjoy.

Cnet - One of the best sites for reviews of HDTVS and other gadgets, now optimized for the iPhone.

Dice - Forget the dice? Whip out your iPhone and roll baby. Grab some malt liquor and a cardboard box and start random games of dice in alleys. Bet your iPhone.

SmallStarFatwallet.com - Get the 411 on hot deals in an iPhone-friendly format. See, you can save money by spending $400 on a phone.

iHang - Classic game of hangman.

Kingdom Game - Online strategy game. Play against hundreds of others and conquer the world. Requires sign up and log in.

iPhone Tip: Google 411 Delivers Phone Numbers, Text Messages, and Google Maps Links

1-800-GOOG-411

This is a good tip for anyone with a cell phone, with a few special bonuses for iPhone users. Google offers a free alternative to cell provider’s regular 411 directory services, which often cost money to use. 1-800-GOOG-411 is an automated directory service that uses voice recognition to handle your queries and a robotic text-to-speech reader (which is sometimes hard to understand, but it’s free, so who’s complaining?) to deliver your data. Like other 411 services, Goog-411 gives you the phone number and address and offers to connect you.

What you may not know is that Goog 411 can send a text message that features a phone number, address, and a Google Maps link. To get the text message, simply say “details” and “text message” when prompted. A text message appears almost instantaneously (at least it does for me).

A tap on the phone number dials the number. A tap on the Google Maps link opens the address location in the Google Maps app. An arrow also appears next to the text message. Tap the arrow, and you can create a new contact with the information or add it to an existing one.

iPhone Contact Creation with Goog-411

Of course, you could also use the Google Maps feature to search for the information as well, but sometimes Goog-411 is quicker if you only know a nearby intersection and don’t want to type out the long names, or if the EDGE network is acting up. In fact, I find that using Goog-411 is much faster than using the keyboard/Internet combination to search and utilize information.

In cardinal numbers, the 1-800-GOOG-411 number is:

1-800-466-4411

Check out the YouTube video below for an introduction to the service by the Google guys.

iPhone Tip: Use Your iPhone to Get Around Website-Blocking at Work

WebsenseThis is a simple tip, but may not have occurred to you. If you’re stuck at a desk job like me, you’ve might have been blocked from accessing a web site, not because it held indecent material, but because the site was a forum, blog, or other type banned by your company’s draconian web access controls. Oftentimes, you need information from the site to help you do your job. Well, iPhone to the rescue. Simply copy the link, then paste it into an email that you send to an account accessible by your iPhone. Access the email on your iPhone, tap the link, and enjoy! That, my friends, is the dark power of the iPhone.

Goofy and Incorrect iPhone Video Tip (Found Video)

Found on YouTube. I have no idea what this guy is talking about in this video tip. He claims that while scrolling through contacts, if you hold a finger down on the letters on the right side, the scrolling slows down and becomes smoother. Huh? No it doesn’t.
