Sound Not Working for iPhone Games Only? Flip the Ringer Switch

Here’s a common problem with the iPhone: suddenly, the sound for iPhone games and apps stops working, yet strangely enough, the sound for music and videos in the iPod app still works. So what’s the problem? It’s actually a quirk of the current iPhone software. Make sure the ringer switch on the side of the iPhone is turned on. If it’s turned to the Off position, not only will your phone not ring, iPhone games will have no sound! I know, I know, it confuses the heck out of me too.

This is not works as designed? I would think if I put the phone to silent mode with a hardware switch all sound on the phone is muted. If your going to annoy the people around you with sound for your games, why then would someone want the ringer silenced? I am actually disappointed when I have it on silent and games *do* make sound.

I’m sick of games that make sound when the ringer is muted. It’s really annoying when I have to exit the app, press Settings, wait, press the app, disable sound, exit, and reload the app.

Mike, if it’s supposed to do this by design, it’s pretty inconsistent. It shuts the sound off for some games, for others it doesn’t.

I was having the problem some people have with the sound only working with headphones. Fixed that, now I can hear calls and alarms, but there is no sound when I play games or music. The ringer switch is in the ON position. After reading other blogs about the moisture strip I checked inside the phone Jack with a flashlight and there is a red dot, so I won’t be recieving any help from Apple or AT&T as they are using the moisture strip to avoid dealing with any and all issues. The sound starts working and then I get a message “This application is not designed to work with iPhone, would you like to switch to airplane mode?” I select “No” and the sound disappears again. Could this be a software issue? Is there a software upgrade or reinstall that someone can suggest?

It’s weird I am using some applications for the iphone such as Dance Dance Revolution S and I know you are supposed to hear music to dance to but I not hearing the music….the ringer switch is on..ringing volume is full….and I don’t know what else to try to hear the music…this happens to only a few apps but it’s really annoying cuz I wanted to play DDR with music….

Here’s my situation:
-ringer switch broken
-have Auto Silent from Cydia to correct the “no keyboard/ringer” sound problem
-sound from speakers works in: youtube, streaming radio apps, music, video, speakerphone
-sound from speakers DO NOT work in: games and other apps where there is supposed to be noise (sound does work when i plug in headphones)
I have looked this up and seems to be related to the “faulty headphone jack” situations. However, my case seems strange, as speaker sounds work in most situations except for some apps.
Any advise on this would be appreciated!

That’s what the problem was!!! Just got the iphone 3gs 32gb, in use for only one week, then all of a sudden no sound during any of the apps. Had sound for the phone ringer and texts but not apps. Flipped the switch just like you said and BAM sound is back! Knew I had to be missing something. Thanks so much for your post!

I had the same issue with no sound on apps & music but phone sounds working. My mute button seemed to indicate it was working but made no difference. I turned down the volume on the side buttons and on increasing them again the sounds came back! Strange, but it may work for someone else hopefully.

Thomas : try to go to your Iphone the Ipod music icon.. play a music and on the sound on the screen.
Suprisingly mine was OK after i did that.
Hope it helps.

Thanks for the tip!
I have my phone in an otter box and as a result never use that little switch; in fact had pretty much forgotten it was there. I could have been troubleshooting for a week.
