Lexel

Lexel ($1.99, iTunes link) is a slick Boggle-meets-Tetris word game. Its stay-ahead-of-the-pace style is similar to two other games we’ve reviewed, WordJolt (review) and WordPops (review). While the game isn’t exactly revolutionary, it has some of the most glossy graphics and robust collection of sound effects we’ve seen in the genre. We are rating it 7.0 out of 10, recommended.

Lexel Menu

The object of Lexel is to slide tiles around the board to form words. Once you create a word, the tiles are removed. New letters are constantly being added, and you must keep ahead of the pace to prevent the board from filling up.

Lexel‘s greatest strengths are its interface, professional graphics, and range of sound effects. The default theme features glossy black tiles that fit right in with the whole iPhone aesthetic. You are not stuck with one theme though, as there are 6 tile sets to choose from, and each has its own unique set of sound effects (the theme-specific sound effects are a pretty sweet design touch).

Lexel Glass Theme

There are 4 board sizes to choose from (5×5 up to 9×9), and 3 game speeds. High scores are kept both locally as well as on online. Lexel‘s high scores website tracks the top scores from around the world.

Our main complaint with Lexel, as it is with many word games, is that there is a lack of depth to the gameplay. There is basically one style of play, and the challenge is in honing your skills. However, we realize this may not be a valid criticism, as many people never grow tired of solving crossword puzzles or playing sudoku.

Conclusion

Lexel‘s standout features are the slick, professional graphics, intuitive easy-to-use interface, and the wide range of sound effects (unique for each tile set). It makes for a perfect casual game for occasional gamers. Serious gamers might find the replay value a little shallow. 7.0 out of 10, recommended.
