Picks of the Week 2

Every week, the staff at Art of the iPhone swipes through their home screens and picks out their favorite iPhone apps. Here are this week’s recommendations.

Yahoo! Fantasy Football ’09

Yahoo Fantasy Football Live Scoring

Alan: Come Sunday afternoon, I don’t like to get off my couch for any reason, not to answer the phone, not to go to the bathroom, not even to check my fantasy football team. Yahoo! Fantasy Football ’09 (free, iTunes link) brings me closer to that dream. The app let’s you view your weekly matchup’s score in real time on your iPhone. You can also set lineups or pick up players. If it only dispensed beer, it’d be the perfect Sunday app.

RedLaser

RedLaser iPhone App

Ben: RedLaser ($1.99, iTunes link) is an application that allows you to scan product barcodes and will then instantly compare prices of that same product online. Not only is the product fast, but it also can be a huge time and money saver. This will be great to use for shopping for the holidays.

Wild West Pinball

Wild West Pinball Update

John: Wild West Pinball ($0.99, iTunes link) was a solid pinball game before its recent 2.0 update. It’s since been made over with better graphics and animations. Now it’s simply the best pinball game for the iPhone. Highly recommended.

All Recipes

All Recipes iPhone App

Tanya: If you’ve ever wandered the grocery store aimlessly trying to think of something to make for dinner, the All Recipes app (free, iTunes link) is for you. It has a huge database of recipes — pulled from the popular AllRecipes.com site — and you can browse featured recipes or search for a specific dish. If you need recipe ideas, the Food Spinner makes it easy. Enter in the meal (lunch, dinner, dessert, etc.), ingredients (fish, pasta, lamb, etc.) and how much time you have, and the app will generate recipe ideas. Most recipes are accompanied by pictures and user reviews. An ingredient list, directions and nutritional information are also included for each recipe.

The Weather Channel

The Weather Channel iPhone App

Tim: The Weather Channel (free, iTunes link): It’s ugly, poorly designed, and ad supported. But when it comes to accuracy of forecast, The Weather Channel app blows the iPhone’s Weather app out of the skies. It can provide information on the current weather, the next 12 hours, 36 hours or 10 days. Video content, weather map, and severe conditions warnings are all also piped into your phone. For all its faults, it has the best information available.
