Case Review: Griffin Reveal Etch

The Griffin Reveal Etch ($30) is the prettier sibling of the Griffin Reveal, a see-through case we reviewed last week. The Etch shares an identical rubber border, but in place of a clear acrylic back is an attractive opaque triangle-patterned design for the back of the iPhone. Overall, the Reveal Etch is a solid case, lacking the typical flaws of lesser cases and offering good shock absorption.

The Reveal Etch‘s border is a semi-soft rubber band that is melded with the hard plastic back. The soft edge juts out from the rest of the case and thus takes the brunt of impacts, offering good shock absorption. This same band also prevents the iPhone 4′s grip of death, putting itself between your finger and the iPhone’s 4′s sweet spot.

iPhone Case Review: Armpocket Sport 20 Jogging Armband

If you’re like me, when you head out running, you don’t only take your iPhone. At a bare minimum, I need the card to get into my apartment building, the key for the front door, an inhaler if it’s winter, etc. So, a small armband that could hold more than just my iPhone is a great concept—no one likes running with a pocket full of keys. Enter the Armpocket Sport 20 ($29.95, link).

A sports armband is a good solution for those not quite in a stage in their life where they’re ready to rock the fanny pack, although using an armband can take some getting used to.

If you’re starting out with your first armband, you should know the Armpocket Sport 20 is slightly larger than the average iPhone sports armband. The “20″ in the Armpocket’s name is because of its 20 cubic-inch carrying capacity. It has a small pouch and a clear plastic window which you can interact with the touch-screen through.

The iPhone is held in place via an elastic band, and the rest of the interior is yours for the filling. It has a pocket with inserts that are just the right size for a credit card and ID. Fitting everything in can be a bit Tetris-like, but with a bit of rearranging, you’re usually on your way quickly.

iPhone Case Review: Tech21 iBand d3o Shock Absorbing Frame V2

The Tech21 iBand d3o Shock Absorbing Frame V2 ($29.95) is a textbook definition of disappointment. I was extremely excited to review this case, due to the promises of the revolutionary material it’s constructed from — d3o. Instead, I found an overpriced case that’s more trouble than it’s worth, and severely lacking in usefulness.

This YouTube video was my first exposure to d3o, a number of years back, and it looked extremely interesting. A non-Newtonian material, which means that it’s normally soft and malleable, but as soon a sufficient amount of force is exerted, it’s molecules lock into a matrix, creating rigid strength. If you ever made oobleck growing up, you have a rough idea of what it does. So when I heard about an iPhone case made of the stuff, I was eager to give it a review. My mistake.

Review: Trexta Snap On Leather Racing Series iPhone Case

While not quite “soft Corinthian leather,” the Trexta Snap On Leather Racing Series case ($30) for iPhone 3G/3Gs is made out of real stitched cowhide, and while the protection it offers might not blow you away, it adds a rather elegant touch of style.

The Racing Series cases by Trexta are available in a number of different colors for both case and racing stripes, of which I reviewed the rather fetching white-black-white on red version. In terms of protection, it’s the same as just about every other slim, molded case on the market—offering protection from everyday scratches but very little shock absorption. But it does a gorgeous job in terms of aesthetics.

The inside surface of the case is matte and slightly soft to the touch, so if any particles are trapped between your phone and the plastic, it feels like they won’t scuff or scrape.

Fit-wise, Trexta have done an admirable job of making these cases fit very well, with a tight, snug cling all the way around the body. It has gaps in the shell for the camera, ports and switches, and a purely aesthetic logo cut through the case in the bottom right.

New Bandshell iPhone Case Offers Acoustic Amplification, Integrated Stand

The Bandshell is a new iPhone case with a unique sliding back that curves outward when deployed and acoustically amplifies sound from the iPhone’s speaker. As the rear slides out, it also works as a stand.

It’s available for $20, and comes in 12 colors: silver, black, white, copper, steel blue, purple, blue, green, yellow, red, pink, and orange. For extra customizability, the sliding sound door is interchangeable, so can be swapped with another case for two-tone colors.

Griffin Teams Up With Chilewich for New Line of iPhone Cases

Griffin and Chilewich Fabric Case

Accessory maker Griffin has teamed up with textile makers Chilewich to make a co-branded line of iPhone accessories called Griffin+Chilewich. Their first creation is the Elan Form Chilewich ($40), which covers a polycarbonate Griffin case with a vinyl-fabric basketweave cover from Chilewich to give it a distinctive visual flair.

The cases are available in light grey and gravel and can be purchased online, through Apple, Griffin or the MoMA design store.

The cases are compatible with the iPhone 3G and 3GS, and its vinyl yarn outer layer means it can be washed off without any problem (sans iPhone, of course).

Quirky Beamer iPhone Case With Built-in LED Light Available For Pre-order

Quirky, the community based design company, have come up with an interesting iPhone case with a built-in LED. Powered by a watch battery (so it doesn’t drain your iPhone), the case would give you up to 10 hours of illumination, which you could use as a sort of flash for the iPhone’s camera or a general light.

Picture 16

Of course, there’s a catch. Quirky is a community design company that develops ideas submitted by the public, and submitters get something back for their work. They need to hit 500 pre-orders on the $32.00 case before they can start a production run. So, if this strikes you as an interesting case that you might want for your phone, think about putting yourself down for one.

Case Review: SwitchEasy RebelSerpent for iPhone 3G & 3GS

SwitchEasy RebelSerpent Case for iPhone 3G 3GS

SwitchEasy has quickly become a premiere case maker for the iPhone, and we found their RebelSerpent ($27) for the iPhone 3G/3GS to be another successful design for the company. It’s a two-part case made from a combination of a “soft” inner case that snugly fits around the iPhone with a hard polycarbonate spine that adds protection. It’s a rugged case that covers up Apple’s gloss-and-chrome design and replaces it with a monochromatic, masculine look. Overall, the case feels solid and well put together, if a bit heavy, in the hand. It’s a highly functional case with a few minor flaws, and we give it a rating of 9.3 out of 10, highly recommended.

SwitchEasy Rebel Serpent Case and Accessories

The RebelSerpent is composed of two separate pieces. The inner part is a a soft and snug-fitting plastic that SwitchEasy labels Adaptive Dynamic Soft Polymer (ADSP). Don’t be fooled by the fancy marketing term though, it’s really just a semi-soft but cheap-feeling plastic. This soft inner lining tightly grips the iPhone, preventing the case from slipping off while taking it out of pockets. The soft lining also prevents the hard part of the case from scratching the iPhone, a common problem with hard-shell cases.

Vers Releases Open-Front Wooden iPhone Cases

verscherry

Vers is known for their handcrafted wooden iPhone and iPod accessories, including the Vers iPhone Infocase ($39.99). While the Infocase is very aesthetically pleasing, you have to remove your iPhone from the case before you can use it. Yesterday, Vers launched the Vers iPhone Shellcase ($39.99), which continues the same design but allows full access to the iPhone’s screen.

The Vers iPhone Shellcase is available in cherry (above), walnut or bamboo versions, and it’s compatible with all generations of the iPhone. According to the product press release, each iPhone case is slightly different due to variations in the wood. I’m drooling over the bamboo and walnut versions just from the product pictures — they’re sleek, polished and just look cool. This is the Vers Shellcase in bamboo:

versbamboo
The only potential downside I can see is the weight, as a wooden iPhone case (reinforced with steel pins) will naturally be heavier than most plastic cases. The Shellcases weigh 1.7 ounces and the iPhone 3GS weighs 4.8 ounces, so the Shellcase will add a good amount of heft to the phone for a total weight of 6.5 ounces.

The iPhone Shellcase is a $39.99 purchase at VersAudio.com, but the cases are not expected to ship until the week of November 23rd.

Despite the extra padding, the case is still quite pocketable, although not as slim or lightweight as most silicone case. A drawback is that the case cannot be used with most iPhone docks with the exception of the wider-mouth Universal docks. 11. JAVOedge Cork Back Cover for iPhone 3G/3GS

The JAVOedge Cork Back Cover ($20) is an innovative rear case for the iPhone 3G and 3GS that crafts its unique look by affixing a layer of shredded cork to a hard-shell layer. The case offers better than usual protection from accidental drops and offers excellent access to all of the iPhone’s ports. But the main selling point is its love-it-or-hate-it style. Some downsides are that the cork does not offer uniform coverage—there are tiny gaps in the cork where the back of the iPhone peeps through. The case does not ship with any accessories.

12. Griffin Clarifi Case with Built-in Close-Up Lens for iPhone 3G

The Griffin Clarifi Case ($25) is a “sliding” case, meaning the bottom half slides off allowing for worry free access to the dock port and speakerphone functionality. But its most distinguishing feature is a macro lens that, once slid in place, allows you to take clearer pictures of close-up objects (objects a few inches away). It also offers the best protection of any case for the iPhone’s camera lens, whose exposed location leaves it susceptible to scratches and fogging effects in pictures.

14. Contour Design iSee for iPhone 3G

The Contour Design iSee ($25) is a clear, hard plastic case that keeps the iPhone’s curvaceous body visible. Why hide it when you can flaunt it? The case is made of two pieces that snap together, encasing the iPhone. It does not come with a front screen protector–a minus or plus depending on who you ask. The clear case is a solid compromise for those wanting protection but also liking the original appearance of the iPhone.

17. Core Cases Aluminum Slider Case for iPhone 3G

The Core Aluminum Slider Case ($30) is a rare metal case for the iPhone–rare because metal can interfere with the iPhone’s cell reception. The case is made from aluminum, which doesn’t block signals as bad as some metals do. However, some do report a slight hit on their reception, so if weak signals are a problem for you, this might not be your case. Still the Core Aluminum case is one of the better looking cases out there (especially in silver).
