Mr. Trivia Lite: Free iPhone Trivia Game

Mr Trivia Lite Free iPhone Game 1

Mr. Trivia Lite is a free iPhone trivia game now available in the iTunes app store. It’s a trial version of an upcoming Mr. Trivia game that will presumably not be free.

The lite version features 2 rounds with 10 questions each. Players are given three multiple choice answers and 30 seconds to answer. The game features pleasant, polished graphics and limited sound effects.

The questions in the lite version are of a general trivia variety and for the most part interesting, but there are some problems. For instance, I noticed numerous typos (check out the misspelling of “ingredient” in the picture above). Questions were sometimes mislabeled with the wrong category (a question about forks and the civil war was labeled “Animal Trivia”). One question began with the anecdote, “I love my cat ‘Pixel’.”

Mr Trivia Free iPhone Game 3

The upcoming pay version will feature 500+ trivia questions, multiple categories, and a bonus lightning round. If you are a trivia nut, this game might be a warm up until something better comes along. But if the sloppiness of the questions from the lite version are any indication, just go ahead and skip it all together.

Two Free Tetris Games for the iPhone: Tris and Teto Teto

There is an official licensed version of Tetris ($9.99) in the iTunes apps store, but it’s expensive and bloated and has long loading times. There are, however, two free basic Tetris clones, Teto Teto!! and Tris. Here’s a look at both of them:

Teto Teto!!

Teto Teto Free iPhone Tetris Clone Game

While both of the Tetris clones are flawed, the better of the two is Teto Teto!!  It won’t win any awards for graphics, but Teto Teto’s button controls are much more accurate than Tris’s, which becomes important when the game speeds up. The buttons rotate and move the blocks left, right, and down. The buttons are in no way comparable to classic tactile buttons, but for Teto Teto, they work well enough to not get in the way of game play.

There is one one minor glitch. If you tap the down button, which accelerates the descent of the blocks, too zealously, it will immediately drop not only the block on the screen and but also the next block in the queue. This is an annoying flaw, but not a game killer, as you learn to be careful and work around it.

Teto Teto also features an interesting strategy twist. There is an area on the right side of the screen called the Stock. Tapping the Stock button will place the next block in the queue in the stock area, and tapping Back will place it back in the queue.  You get 5 stocks, which you keep track of on the left side of the screen.

Overall, what makes Teto Teto superior to Tris is the accuracy of control. This becomes more important in later stages when the pace of the game begins to pick up.

Tris

iLounge recently took a look at both of these games and listed Tris as the better of the two. While I agree that Tris is the better looking and intially the smoothest, I found it frustrating to control the blocks accurately as the game sped up.

Tris uses finger swipes to move the blocks left, right, and down. Players simply tap the screen to rotate the blocks clockwise (there is no option to rotate them counterclockwise). The problem with Tris’s controls comes with the inaccuracy of the finger swipe positioning. Also, accidental taps tended to be a problem.

Both of these games are very basic (neither features sound) and make for a very average Tetris-like experience. Their controls will take some time to get used to thanks to some control flaws. Since they’re both free, they are a risk-free proposition.

Access Your iTunes Music and Media Anywhere With SimplifyMedia iPhone App

SimplifyMedia for iPhone Streaming Music

SimplifyMedia is an iPhone app that lets you play iTunes music and other media files from your home computer anywhere you have an Internet connection with your iPhone. It works over EDGE and 3G as well as WiFi, although the time it takes to stream a song or video will depend on connection speed.

It also lets you access the iTunes libraries of up to 30 friends. It won’t stream DRM-protected music, so any music purchased from iTunes most likely won’t work (unless it comes from iTunes Plus), only DRM-less formats like mp3s will stream.

It works on a PC, Mac, or Linux, and requires you to create a free account with SimplifyMedia on your home computer. It requires no router configuration.

Two New Apps for Sports Scores and News

Last week,  two new apps for sports scores and news were added to the iTunes app store: Sportacular and ScoreMobile. Here’s a look at both, along with an opinion on which is the best.

Sportacular

Sportacular iPhone app

Sportstacular is my favorite of the two new apps. It offers live scores, standings, news, box scores, game plays, and the ability to track the stats of individual players.

For live baseball scores, Sportacular shows a graphic displaying who’s on base, the pitcher and batter, ball and strike count, number of outs, a traditional 9-inning scoreboard, as well as a box score and a list of game plays. Scores automatically refresh every 30 seconds.

Sportacular iPhone Native App

Box scores are presented in a split view, showing the stats of only one team per page. I’m not sure why this has become the norm for iPhone apps (both native and web). I’d like to see a full box score on only one page.

The news page looks like an RSS feed, with a headline and brief summary of the article. Tapping on the article opens up the article’s website within the app (the news comes from third-party sites like ESPN, Fox Sports, etc). This is a nice feature as it doesn’t take you to Mobile Safari then force you to navigate back to the app.

Sportacular News View

Sportacular also makes it easy to follow your fantasy players. Specific players can be added to a customizable page. This allows you to easily check your fantasy players’ performances.

ScoreMobile

ScoreMobile iPhone App

ScoreMobile has a more simple approach than Sportacular, focusing on scores. The app features live scoreboard, box scores, and a writeup of games that have ended, but no news or individual player tracking.

ScoreMobile also features the Vegas line of upcoming games for the sports betting enthusiast.

Pour One Out for Your Homie With Pour1Out

Pour1Out iPhone Free app 2

The situation is all too common: a homie just got green lighted up in the hood, now he dead and not a 40 oz in sight. If you’ve clipped up with the iPhone, you’s can get right with yourself. Tip the 40-ounce malt liquor bottle and virtually pour some out on the curb.

Pour1Out is a free app that actually serves as an advertisement for 40cozy.com, a site that sells bottle cozies for 40 oz malt liquor and beer bottles. The app does offer another useful feature: it finds the nearest liquor store using your current location.

So go ahead, pour one out.

Save Benjis (Free iPhone App)

Save Benjis Free iPhone App

Save Benjis is a free iPhone app that might save you some benjamins. The app allows for quick comparison shopping by searching for prices of products on the Internets. For instance, if you were in Borders and wanted to see if you could get a book cheaper online, you’d simply type in the name of the book. Up comes a list of prices from a range of stores, including eBay auctions, Best Buy, Barnes & Noble, Buy.com, etc.

Once you’ve found the right price, Save Benjis gives you an option to email the link to yourself, or you could even just go ahead and buy the product using the iPhone.  There are also advanced search options for searching by bar codes or  using manufacturer product numbers.

There does seem to be at least one big negative for Save Benjis: no prices from Amazon.com. For me, Amazon is the barometer for which I judge all prices, so it’s disappointing it doesn’t show up in search results. Still, Save Benjis is a good way to make sure you’re always getting the best price for a product.
