Tip: How to Speed Up Your iPhone Synching

It’s happened to us all, you’re in a rush to leave and you just want to sync a few songs and podcasts to your iPhone. You hit sync, and suddenly you find yourself waiting…and waiting…and waiting.

What’s taking so long is that all the data on iPhone is being backed up by iTunes. There’s a simple temporary fix, and it involves canceling the backup process. Just follow this simple step:

When synching the iPhone, you should see a progress message at the top of iTunes that reads “Backing up [Your Name]‘s iPhone.” Simply click the X next to this text.

This will cancel the backup process, but synching will continue. Synching is much quicker than the backup process, even with large files. You should be finished and on your way in anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes. You can watch the progress bar at the top of iTunes to gauge the time.

It’s important to note that you shouldn’t cancel backups too often, as having a backup of your iPhone is important in case the data on your iPhone somehow becomes corrupted. If you didn’t have a backup, you wouldn’t be able to fully restore the information on your iPhone.

How to Activate a Used iPhone

Used iPhones

If you want to activate a used iPhone, you have a few options. The first option is the easiest: take it to an AT&T Wireless store and set up a new account. A second option is to jailbreak the iPhone and use it as an iPod touch without phone service. A third option is to jailbreak and unlock the iPhone for use on another carrier like T-Mobile.

Take the iPhone to AT&T Wireless

If a friend or loved one gives you their old iPhone, you can make it your own by taking it to an AT&T store and telling them you have an old iPhone and would like to use it as your own. You’ll have to sign up for AT&T service, and they’ll give you a new sim card. Once you install the SIM card, you can activate the iPhone at home using iTunes. This is by far the easiest way to activate and reuse an old iPhone.

Can I Use a Carrier Other Than AT&T?

The iPhone works best with AT&T, but it is possible to unlock the iPhone so that it works with other carriers (note that the iPhone only works on GSM networks like AT&T and T-Mobile, it does not work on Verizon or Spring, which are CDMA networks). We don’t recommend unlocking, but if you want to do it, it is not illegal. An unlocked iPhone can be a hassle, however. For example, you won’t be able to take advantage of Apple’s iPhone software updates until the people who created the unlocking software tell you it’s ok to update.

How to Add Emoji to the iPhone

*2nd Update 8/15/2010 See our updated instructions on how to enable emoji on the iPhone*

*Update 2-7-2009* It appears iPhone Software 2.2.1 broke this method of adding emoji to the iPhone. Alternative methods are the apps Typing Genius – Get Emoji and Touch Dial Emoji.

—-

Emoji are cute little Japanese icons that can be sent in SMS text messages. They will appear to the receiver of the message if their phone is an iPhone with 2.2 software, or if their phone has support for emoji.

Up to this point, only users in Japan had access to them on the iPhone (that is, if you didn’t want to hack your iPhone). Now, if you download a $0.99 app called frostyplace, you too can add emoji to your iPhone. Here are step-by-step instructions:

How to Activate Emoji on iPhone

1. Download Frostyplace for 99 cents from the iTunes app store.

FrostyPlace iPhone app

2. Launch the frostyplace app.

3. Tap two or three stories (it doesn’t matter which). They will be in Japanese:

Tap Articles in FrostyPlace

4. Tap the second icon on the bottom right of the app. Then tap on two or three stories (again, doesn’t matter which):

Tap the Second Bottom Right Icon

5. Close the app.

6. Open the iPhone Settings.

iPhone Settings Button

7. Tap General:

Tap General in iPhone Settings

8. Scroll down and tap Keyboard:

Select Keyboard in General Settings

9. Tap International Keyboards at the bottom of the screen:

Tap International Keyboards

10. Scroll down and tap Japanese:

Tap the Japanese Tab

11. Slide the Emoji tab to On:

Emoji Tab on the iPhone

And that’s it. To use the emoji, open the SMS app and hit the Globe icon at the bottom of the screen:

Tap Globe in the SMS App

Note that there are 6 tabs for 6 sets of emoji, but there are multiple pages of icons for each set of emoji. Drag your finger right to left to view them all.

How to Send a Call to Voicemail With the iPhone

We’ve all been in this situation: the iPhone rings, but you can’t take the call. If you want to immediately silence the call (turn off the ringtone and vibration), press the sleep button once.

If you want to send the call directly to voicemail, press the sleep button again. So in other words, to send a call to voicemail after it rings, press the sleep button twice. The sleep button is located on the top of your iPhone on the righthand side.

Send iPhone Call to Voicemail: Press Sleep Button Twice

If you’re using the iPhone headphones, press the headphone button once to answer the call. Press it twice to send it to voicemail.

How To Create a Free iPhone Ringtone Using iTunes

The iPhone comes with a small selection of default ringtones, but you can make your own using any mp3 or DRM-free song in iTunes. Below are step-by-step instructions on how to do this.

How to Make an iPhone Ringtone in iTunes:

1. Open iTunes.

2. Open Preferences in the iTunes menu at the top (it may be under Edit for Windows users):

Create iPhone Ringtone Step 1

3. Select the General tab:

Create iPhone Ringtone Step 2

4. Select Import Settings:

Import Settings

5. Click on the dropdown list after Importing Using:

Click on DropDown

6. Select AAC Encoder (it may already be the default):

Set iTunes Encoder to AAC

7. Select OK to go back to the Preferences, then select OK again.

Select OK

8. Select Music in the left iTunes sidebar and find a song you want to make into a ringtone:

Select Music in iTunes

9. You’ll need to find a 40 second or less section of the song to turn into a ringtone. Note (or write down) the starting and stopping point of the section of the song. You can see the time of the song in the play window at the top of iTunes:

iTunes Song Time

10. Right click on the song, and select Get Info:

Right Click and Select Get Info

11. Select the Options tab at the top:

Options Tab

12. Enter the start and stop time of the clip in the corresponding boxes and make sure the checkboxes are checked when you are finished:

Start and Stop

13. Click OK in the bottom right.

14. In the iTunes menu at the top, click Advanced, then Create AAC Version from the drop-down menu:

15. You should see a second version of the song appear in iTunes, only with the shorter play time. Click to play to make sure it sounds how you’ll want the ringtone to sound.

A Second Shortened Copy of the Song is Created

16. We aren’t quite finished yet! Now we have to change the file format so that it will appear as a ringtone in iTunes.

17. Navigate to the folder where the new clip is stored on your computer (it will be in the same folder as the original version of the song). If you’re on a Mac, simply right-click the clip and select Show In Finder.

18. Copy the song (press Control and C for Windows, Command and C for Mac), and paste the song in the same folder (Control and V or Command and V) so that a third version appears.

Third Copy of Song

19. Now, change the file extension of the third version from .m4a to .m4r. If you’re on Windows XP and don’t see the file extension, go to Tools –> Folder Options –> View and uncheck Hide extensions for known file types. For Vista: Organize –> Folder and Search Options and uncheck Hide extension for known file types.

Change File Extension to m4r

20. Rename the file, if you want (for example, AfromanRingtone.m4r). Note: If there are symbols such as underscores or hyphens in the name you must remove them from the name.

21. Important: In iTunes, delete the first AAC clip you made by right-clicking on the clip and selecting delete (if you don’t do this, iTunes might not accept the new ringtone):

22. Go back to the folder with the new ringtone file (.m4r file). Drag and drop the file into iTunes. Or import it by opening iTunes, select File, and select: Windows XP/Vista: Add File to Library, Mac: Add to Library.

Add Ringtone to iTunes Library

23. Now we need to sync the ringtone to your iPhone. Connect the iPhone to the computer.

Connect the iPhone to Computer

24. Click on your iPhone in the left sidebar in iTunes:

Add Photos to iTunes Step 2a

25. Click on the Ringtones tab, check the Sync ringtones checkbox, then check All ringtones or Selected ringtones.:

Sync Ringtones to iPhone

26. Now click the Apply button in the bottom right (it may also say Sync. Click Sync if it does).

Click Apply or Sync

And that’s it. You’ve done it! The ringtone is now on the iPhone. Got to Settings on your iPhone, tap Sounds, and you can change to your new ringtone. If the ringtone doesn’t show up on the iPhone, follow the Troubleshooting steps below, else go to the Clean Up section for one important last step.

Troubleshooting

Did the ringtone not appear on your iPhone? Follow these steps.

1. Click on the Summary tab for your iPhone in iTunes:

2. See if the checkbox labeled Manually manage music and video is checked. If it is, leave it alone and go on to the next step.

3. Click on Ringtones in the left sidebar and find the ringtone:

4. Drag and drop the ringtone onto your iPhone in the left sidebar. The iPhone should begin synching immediately, and the ringtone will appear shortly on your iPhone:

Clean Up

You made the ringtone, but there’s one clean-up task to do. We need to fix the Start/Stop time of the original song. Otherwise, the next time you play the song, it won’t play the whole thing. In iTunes, right click the original song, select Get Info –> Options and reset the Start/Stop time by deleting the numbers and leaving the fields blank. All done!

How to Add Photos to Your iPhone Contacts

If you have a photo assigned to a contact on the iPhone, the photo will pop up and fill the entire screen when the contact calls you. The feature is useful for quick at-a-glance recognition of callers and is something fun and special to do for your favorite people.

To add a photo, you’ll first need to get the photo onto the iPhone. Here are instructions on how to do this. If the person is in photo range, you can also snap a quick picture using the iPhone’s camera.

If the photo is already on your iPhone, follow the instructions below.

Instructions for Adding Photos to iPhone Contacts:

1. Tap on the Contacts app, or tap Contacts in the Phone app:

Add Photos Step 1

2. Scroll to the person or business you want to add the photo to, and tap their name.

3. Tap Edit in the top right corner:

Edit a Contact

4. Tap Add Photo.

Add Photo to iPhone Contact

5. Tap Choose Existing Photo if you have a photo on your iPhone that you want to use. Or, tap Take Photo if the person is in photo range:

Choose Photo for iPhone Contacts

6. Selecting Choose Exising Photo will open up the iPhone’s Photo Albums. Navigate through your pictures and select the one you want.

7. You can edit the size and orientation of the photo. This comes in handy if you want to use just the face of a person, or if there are multiple people in a photo. You edit by zooming in and out using pinching gestures or by dragging the photo left, right, up, or down:

Move and Scale iPhone Photos

8. When you are finished, tap Set Photo.

9. Tap Done in the top right corner, and you’ve successfully added a photo to your contact.

Done Adding Picture to iPhone Contact

And that’s it. The next time the contact calls, you can see their bright smiling face lit up on your iPhone.

Double Clicking the iPhone’s Home Button

Double Click iPhone Home Button

Here’s a time saver and one of my favorite iPhone tips. No matter what you’re doing on the iPhone, double clicking the iPhone’s home button can either bring up your phone favorites or display the iPod controls. Both of these options can save you a lot of clicks and finger taps.

To set up the double click feature, start by tapping the Settings icon on the home screen.

iPhone Settings icon

Select the General tab.

General Tab in iPhone Settings Menu

Scroll down to the Home Button tab and select it.

Home Button in iPhone General Settings

You’ll see three choices:

Double Click Home Button Choices in iPhone Settings Menu

Home simply takes you to the home screen with a double click. You may want to choose this if you’re a little trigger happy with clicking the home button and don’t want to go to the phone favorites or iPod.

Phone Favorites will take you to a list of your favorite contacts. If you use the iPhone mostly as a phone, the favorites combined with the double click can give very quick access to your favorite contacts.

iPod can do two things. If you’re listening to music and using another app, double clicking will cause the iPod controls to pop up on the screen in the foreground. If you’re not already playing music, double clicking will switch from the app you’re using to the iPod app.

iPod Controls from Double Clicking on the iPhone

However, if you want the double click to always switch from the app you’re using to the iPod app, you can set the iPod Controls tab to Off.

Insurance for the iPhone at Best Buy

Shattered iPhone 3

iPhone Alley is reporting that Best Buy is offering insurance for the iPhone 3G via their Geek Squad Black Tie protection plan. The service costs $14.99 a month and only applies to iPhone 3Gs purchased at Best Buy.

The new Geek Squad Black Tie protection plan is for a whole range of consumer electronics purchased at Best Buy, but here are some relevant details for subscription wireless phones:

  • One battery repair/replacement when the original battery is determined defective
  • Repair/replacement of the charger or cradle that was originally included with the product’s purchase if determined defective
  • ADH Protection: providing parts and labor coverage in the event of accidental damage resulting in the normal usage of the product. ADH protection is fulfilled if 2 repairs with cracked screens or replacement of the product are completed

At $14.99 a month, protecting your iPhone will cost around $180 a year. This might be viable for people who abuse their iPhone. But it should be noted that AT&T Wireless currently offers a free upgrade to your iPhone one year after you begin a two-year contract. You just need to sign a new two-year contract, of course.

iPhone Dropped in Toilet

Best Buy’s Black Tie protection plan does not cover theft, loss, or water damage. So if you flush it down the toilet, you’re out of luck.
