Review: Christmas Tree Decorator iPhone App

christmastree1

There are some iPhone apps that I just don’t get, and Christmas Tree Decorator ($0.99, iTunes link) is one of those apps. It’s a standard ‘decorate a fake tree’ app, and while I love the holiday spirit embodied in this app, and despite its popularity in the App Store, I found it kind of pointless and boring, really.

Christmas Tree Decorator has a very simple premise – decorate a blank Christmas tree with your choice of 36 ornaments, tree toppers and lights. It’s hard to classify Christmas Tree Decorator as a game because there’s really no goal. I guess you could say the “goal” of the app is to move the ornaments and lights into position on the Christmas tree so it looks nice. The ornaments include large bulbs, candy canes and spiral glass ornaments. There are also six different colors of lights.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas Interactive Book (Best Apps for Kids)

It’s nice to see a Dr. Seuss children’s book arrive on the iPhone in such a a fun and innovative way. How the Grinch Stole Christmas ($3.99, iTunes link) is the classic book with the original art and text along with some cool interactive features.

The book has a professional narrator that reads the book to you. Or, you can choose no narrator to read the book yourself. If you do choose the narrator, your child can follow along with the text, as words are highlighted as they are read. It’s a nice learning tool, as your child will learn to recognize the words.

Each scene in the book also lets you tap various areas of the screen, which will produce custom audio and make words and graphics zoom up on the screen.

Are iPhones a Learning Tool or Mind-Numbing Pacifiers for Kids?

Boston Globe Magazine - Kids and SmartphonesIt’s amazing how quickly kids can figure out an iPhone. The Boston Globe recently took a look at the trend of parents handing their iPhones to children to play with and the subsequent creation of a mobile generation.

These “mobile kids” are the purest breed yet of natives to the wireless world where the rest of us are refugees. Their fluency with technology and expectations of instant access to everything will eclipse even those of their older siblings and cousins, the “digital kids” weaned on desktop computers wired to the Web. This is why my 4-year-old is incredulous when I can’t honor her request to replay the Taylor Swift song we’ve just heard on the car radio. She simply can’t comprehend how something electronic could be beyond our personal control, even if we’re talking about public airwaves.

But are iPhones good or bad for kids? As with any media, experts stress moderation in screen time and note that parents should focus on offering them educational apps and keeping them away from the fart apps. They also note the strengths of the iPhone (and iPod touch) as a mobile, interactive learning experience.

What has Buckleitner so excited is the way in which the iPhone…allows the preschooler to manipulate symbols, jumping easily from concrete to abstract. On the screen, a child can see a picture—a concrete symbol—of, say, a starfish, and then hear the word spoken, and then see the letters s-t-a-r-f-i-s-h—an abstract symbol—and then view video footage of an actual starfish in its natural environment. Most important, the child is the one controlling this movement — all through her sense of touch. The iPhone may not accelerate a child’s progression through Piaget’s stages, Buckleitner says, “but it will fill up each stage more and make it a lot richer.”

Curious George Coloring Book ($2.99, iTunes link) is a cool little coloring book app for the iPhone and iPod touch. There are 48 different pictures to color in featuring the curious little monkey and his friends. Check out our video below for a closer look:

The controls are easy enough to use, although grownups will likely have to assist very young children. Simply select a paint color by tapping it, then tap the area you want to fill in with that color. Make a mistake? Tap the eraser, then tap the area to remove the color. There is also a book of stickers that can be used to add items like bananas and hats to the pictures.

The app automatically saves your progress in case you have to stop coloring and want to resume later. You can also save and add your finished pictures to a gallery for later viewing.

Overall, the app is very impressive for its polish and ease of use. It has bright, colorful graphics and cool animations for applying the paint that will appeal to kids. We can highly recommend it for parents with young children.

iColoring Book (iPhone Apps for Kids)

iColoringBook ($0.99, iTunes link) is an excellent app for kids that turns your iPhone into a coloring book. It’s a fun and interactive way to color that uses your finger as the crayon. There is also a free Lite version available for those who just want to try it out.

The app has two ways of coloring. The first is a “normal” method where you can color anywhere, meaning you can draw outside the lines, across the lines, etc. The other method, which is recommended, is a “fill” method where your color will stay inside the lines even if your finger goes across one.

You can zoom in and out of pictures to aid in coloring those tricky areas. To zoom in, simply select the Move tab at the top, then use the finger spread method to zoom in. Use the pinch gesture to zoom back out.

To select a color, tap any of the crayons at the bottom. Give the row of crayons a swipe with your finger to search through the numerous colors.

The free “Lite” version comes with 10 pictures, and the full version comes with 30 pictures and the ability to import more coloring pages. The app gives you the ability to save your progress, in case you want to finish the picture later. You can also save multiple versions of the same picture to compare and contrast your coloring talent.

Animal Mechanicals Memory Match (free, download) is a colorful memory match game that features three difficulty levels to choose from: easy, medium, and hard, with corresponding grid sizes of 4×3, 4×4, and 6×5.

Animal Mechanicals

The game features bright colors that kids will like, as well as a few sound effects, such as a flipping sound when the cards are turned, and a ringing sound when a match is made. It should be noted that the cards are rather small and may be hard for young children to select accurately.

Memory Match

PearMe

PearMe Memory match Game

PearMe (free, download) is a memory match game that allows you to use your own photos. Simply tap the photographs to flip them over.

The large size of the cards are kids friendly, as it will allow them to choose the cards accurately. The game allows you to add your own photos to the game. Children will get a kick out of seeing their own faces suddenly appear, or even mom and dad’s faces on the cards.

Add Photos in PearMe

To add you own photos, tap the letter i in the bottom right corner, then tap Available Photos, then scroll down to the bottom and select Add from Photo Library. You can delete any or all of the default photos from the game by swiping left to right on the photos.

Although the game lacks bright colors (except for the pictures themselves), it does offer the largest cards, so kids will find it easy to play. You can drag the cards around with your finger as well. I do recommend you use your own pictures, because some of the default ones are quite bland and won’t appeal to kids.

The type of music varies, from a solo flute to a portion of a contemporary rock song (each level has a theme). You must match the sounds.

The lite version only features 9 levels, but if you play the same levels over again, the sounds are selected randomly, so you may hear new ones you haven’t heard before.

WordSearch Kids (iPhone App for Kids)

WordSearch Kids iPhone Game

WordSearch Kids ($0.99, download) is a word-finding game designed with kids in mind. There are 3 difficult levels (easy, medium, and hard) and nine categories of words to choose from:

Animals
Colors
Cookies
Drinks
Fruit
Musical Instruments
Pizza Toppings
Sports
Toys

When you find one of the words in the puzzle, simply trace your finger over the letters. In a nice touch, as you trace, each letter will appear beside your finger, eventually spelling out the word. This solves the problem of your finger obscuring the puzzle, and lets you know when to stop tracing.

WordSearch Kids

The difficulty levels determine how the words appears. For instance, in easy level, the words are spelled out in the puzzle left to right or top to bottom (no tricky diagonal or backwards words). In the difficult level, the words could be spelled out in any direction.

WordSearch Kids 3

The game features cute sounds such as a bell when you trace out a word correctly and a cat meowing when you tap on the Animals category.

Conclusion

WordSearch Kids is a simple educational game for children, and it’s easier to carry around than a stack of word-find puzzle books. It’s also easy enough for a child to operate by themselves. Recommended for small children who can spell.
