Christmas-Themed iPhone Commercial Features “12 Apps of XMas”

Apple’s latest ad for the iPhone 3GS puts a spin on the classic Christmas carol “12 Days of Christmas” by introducing the “12 Apps of Xmas.”

With music from the classic carol playing in the background, a narrators sings “On the twelth day of Christmas my iPhone gave to me” and lists the following apps:

Just in time for the holiday season, Apple has released two new “there’s an app for that” iPhone ads. The commercials once again focus on apps, featuring brief glimpses of 6 apps each, and end with the slightly altered tagline, “There are now over a 100,000 apps for just about anything.” The song in the background is “Submarine Symphonika” (iTunes link) by The Submarines.

Gift

The first, called “Gift,” shows off the following apps:

Song

The second ad is “Song“, and covers the following apps:

Neither ad is specifically Christmas related, though the first one does have a rather holiday feel, with emphasis on buying presents, ski conditions, and travel.

3 New iPhone Commercials: “Dine In, Dine Out” “Nature Lovers” and “Pass Time”

Apple has released 3 new iPhone commercials once again themed around showing the diversity of apps for the iPhone. The fast-paced commercials blitz through 6 apps each (previous ads focused on only 3). There is a lack of an overarching theme to the app selection, something present in previous ads. A new background song is featured: “Submarine Symphonika” by The Submarines.

The commercials are unusually fast-paced. I don’t think I’d remember or recognize any of the apps after viewing it on TV. What do you think? Good commercials?

New iPhone Commercial “Avid” Focuses on Sports Apps

Apple has released a new iPhone commercial called “Avid” that focuses on apps for avid sports fans (golf, baseball, and tennis).

Featured in the ad are the following apps:

Golfshot: Golf GPS ($29.99, iTunes link) is a golfing app that uses GPS to measure the distance from where your ball lies to the green. It’s also a scorecard. It includes an automatic course handicap calculator, personal historical score tracking, and charts. Features over 15,000 golf courses. The app is very well reviewed in the App Store (currently averages 5 stars).

MLB.com At Bat 2009 ($9.99, iTunes link) is the official app from major league baseball that streams live video of games (one free per day, or all games if you subscribe to MLB.tv) and streams audio of all games, as well as delivering scores and stats.

TouchSports Tennis ’09 ($0.99, iTunes link) is a realistic 3D tennis game with a dynamic POV camera. TouchArcade called it “console quality,” whatever that means.

The commercial ends with the tagline “There’s an app for just about anything. Only on the iPhone.” The background music is “Mr. Pitiful” by Matt Costa (iTunes link).

Two New iPhone Commercials: “Share” & “Travel”

Apple has released two new iPhone commercials called “Share” and “Travel.” The focus is once again on apps, with the ads featuring three each.

Share

“Share” is themed around sharing information or some downtime using the iPhone. The apps featured are:

Mover (free, iTunes link) makes transfering images, contacts, text clippings and bookmarks to other nearby iPhones easy with just a flick of the finger. Just connect to the same WiFi network, open Mover on both iPhones, and start flicking.

Bump (free, iTunes link) lets you share contact info by bumping two iPhones together. It works over 3G, EDGE, and WiFi for both the iPhone and iPod Touch. Both devices need to have the app open for it to work.

Scrabble ($4.99, iTunes link) is the classic board game that can be played against a friend over WiFi or through Facebook.

Travel

“Travel” focuses on apps that make traveling easier. In particular, a Paris vacation. The apps featured are:

Rick Steves’ Historic Paris Walk ($4.99, iTunes link) is an interactive Paris travel guide that features text, audio, and video that will narrate the history and other interesting facts about points of interest throughout the city.

Paris Metro 09 ($4.99, iTunes link) is a route planner for public transportation in Paris. Tap on the map for location information, search, or choose from a list of locations. Points of interest, museums, hotels, parks, restaurant, shops, hospitals, streets, etc, are also included. The route planner will automatically suggest the nearest station to any place of interest you select.

Postman ($0.99, iTunes link) lets you create and send digital postcards on the iPhone using your own pictures or a Google Map of your location.

Both commercials end with the tagline “There’s an app for just about anything.” The background music is “Mr. Pitiful” by Matt Costa (iTunes link).

New iPhone 3GS Commercial: “Skateboard”

“Skateboard” focuses on the iPhone 3GS’s video recording and editing abilities. The video features a close-up of the screen of an iPhone as it records a skateboarder on a ramp (with curious legal copy below that reads “Auto-exposure altered”). The ad ends with the just-made video being attached to an email and the narrator saying “And this is the new iPhone sharing video. Video on the iPhone 3GS, the most powerful iPhone yet.”

The music playing in the background is “Mr. Pitiful” by Matt Costa (iTunes link).

Two New iPhone 3GS Commercials

Apple has released two new commercials for the iPhone 3GS: “Voice Control” and “Copy & Paste.” The song playing in the background in both commericals is “Mr. Pitiful” by Matt Costa (iTunes link).

The commercials are a departure from Apple’s previous focus on apps and instead examine some of the new features of iPhone 3.0. The ads end with a new tagline: “The most powerful iPhone yet.”

Voice Control

The ad takes a look at the new voice control feature of the iPhone. Examples of voice calling and controlling the iPod (“Play songs by Jack Johnson”) are shown.

Copy and Paste

A narrator introduces the iPhone and says it lets you do some pretty incredible things. It then shows how to copy and paste a phone number, an article with picture into an email, and a Google Map. Hmm, I’m not sure copy and paste qualifies as a “pretty incredible thing.”

Apple Introduces iPhone 3G S

Apple announced today the iPhone 3G S, the next generation iPhone that will be available in stores on June 19, 2009. The iPhone 3G S will cost $199 for the 16GB version and $299 for the 32GB version with a 2-year contract (price is subsidized for new users and “qualifying” customers). The iPhone 3G S will come in black or white. Apple will also keep the 8GB iPhone 3G in its lineup and offer it for $99 with a 2-year contract.

Check out the first commercial for the iPhone 3G S below:

Hardware Updates

The iPhone 3GS will retain the same glossy looks as its predecessor but will receive some nice updates to its internal hardware. Here’s a quick look at the hardware updates for iPhone 3G S.

3-Megapixel Camera

The 3G S will have a 3-megapixel camera that features autofocus and autoexposure. The camera will have improved low-light sensitivity and improved macro shooting for close-up objects (as close as 10 centimeters). The 3G S will also come with 30fps video (with auto white balance, autofocus, and autoexposure).

Longer Battery Life

Apple also claims to have improved battery performance for the iPhone 3GS (although whether or not there’s a new battery inside is unknown), with WiFi usage time improving from 6 to 9 hours, 7 to 10 hours for watching video, 24 to 30 hours for listening to music, and 10 to 12 hours talking over 2G. Talk time over 3G, however, stayed unchanged at 5 hours.

Digital Compass

A new digital compass is included that will allow the iPhone to know which direction it is facing (north, south, east, west, etc). A basic use of this is to reorient Google maps so that it’ll reflect the direction you’re facing, but will also come in hand for turn-by-turn directions for your car and probably hundreds of other new uses developers will think up.

Faster 3G Connectivity

The 3GS will support 7.2 Mbps HSDPA, which is twice as fast as AT&T’s current 3G network in the US. AT&T has announced plans to start rolling out a 7.2 Mbps network upgrade in 2009, starting in select cities and making it nationwide by 2011. Anyone with plans to upgrade to the 3G S for its speed improvement should first check with AT&T Wireless to make sure it will be available in their area first.

Faster Processor

Apple is claiming an all-around speedier iPhone, with NY Times loading 2.9 times faster in the browser, and SimCity loading 2.4 times faster.

Apple Releases 3 New iPhone Commercials: “Office,” “Itchy,” and “Student”

Apple has released three new iPhone commercials, and once again, the ads focus on the versatility of iPhone applications and their use in everyday, real-life situations. The commercials end with the now familiar tagline “There’s an app for just about anything.”

Office

The “Office” commercial is aimed at small business owners. The premise of the ad is carrying out a customer transaction using apps on the iPhone. The iPhone is used to process a credit card, print a shipping label, and track the FedEx delivery. See below for a look at each app.

The apps used in the commercial are:

Credit Card Terminal

Credit Card Terminal ($49.99, iTunes link) lets you process credit card transactions anywhere you have a network connection. Credit card numbers are not stored on the iPhone, and transactions are done over an encrypted SSL connection. Transactions require an account with Authorize.net, which costs $25 a month and $0.24 per transaction.

Print & Share

Print & Share ($6.99, iTunes link) allows you to print documents wirelessly from your iPhone to your computer. Documents could even be printed remotely to your office if you were traveling. The app requires free desktop software called WePrint (Mac and Windows) to be running on the computer connected to the printer.

FedEx Mobile for iPhone

FedEx Mobile for iPhone (free, iTunes link) lets you track your FedEx packages using your iPhone. Its provides customization options like nicknaming shipments, adding notes, and creating watch lists for priority packages. You can also create shipping labels (and print them with Print & Share?), get shipping rate quotes, and find the closest FedEx office.

Itchy

The “Itchy” commercial has an outdoor theme and is targeted toward outdoor types and nature lovers. I’m not sure if this is a big market for the iPhone, but perhaps the “mobile computer” aspect of the iPhone appeals to this market. The commercial features three apps.

The apps used in the commercial are:

Compass Go

Compass Go ($1.99, iTunes link) is a “GPS compass,” meaning you must set a target destination, and an arrow will point you in the direction you walk to reach the target. The directions are “as the bird flies,” not street directions, so it’s mostly useful for walking and not driving.

iBird Explorer

iBird Explorer Backyard, Plus, and Pro (Backyard, $4.99, iTunes link; Plus, $19.99, iTunes link; Pro, $29.99, iTunes link) are a birdwatching apps that serve as a field guide to help identify birds in the wild. All data is stored locally on the iPhone, so there is no need to connect to the Internet to access the information. The Pro version features 891 bird species. Features include the ability to listen to birdsongs and calls of almost every species of North American bird, 1,700 bird photographs identifying characteristics like plumage and behavior, and maps for typical North American locations of species.

How To Videos from Howcast.com

How To Videos from Howcast.com (free, iTunes link) gives streaming-video access to Howcast.com, a site dedicated to How To videos. The video depicted in the commercial shows you “How to Recognize and Avoid Poison Ivy.”

Student

The “Student” commercial is aimed at college students and shows how iPhone apps can help students deal with everyday college issues. The apps in the commercial help find an apartment, a cheaper textbook, and crops a picture featuring a student partying to something more acceptable for sending to mom and dad.

Apartments

Apartments (free, iTunes link) gives access to Apartment Guide‘s database of available apartments. The app displays photos as well as any and all information about apartments provided by the leasers. There are driving instructions and maps for each apartment, as well as the ability to save apartments to a favorites list.

SnapTell

SnapTell (free, iTunes link) is a price comparison app that lets you snap a picture of a product with your iPhone’s camera, upload it to SnapTell’s service, and quickly get online prices.

Photogene

Photogene ($2.99, iTunes link) is photo editing software designed for your iPhone. It offers dozens of features including basics like crop, rotate, and color correction as well as more advanced like thought and speech bubbles. The app received a PC Mag Editor’s Choice award and was one of iLounge’s 100 best iPhone apps.

Note: The song in the background of all three commericals is “You, Me, and the Bourgeoisie” by the Submarines (iTunes link).

New iPhone Commercial: “Check”

Apple released an iPhone commercial that focuses on 3 new apps that “check” things:

Snow Reports ($1.99, download) gives personalized snow reports for ski resorts around the world.

Lose It! (free, download) helps maintain a daily calorie “budget” by adding up your calories and balancing it against calories burned from exercise.

G-Park ($0.99, download) lets you mark your car’s parking position using the iPhone’s GPS. You can also take a picture of where you parked using the app.
