Update to the A World of iPhone Links Page

Art of the iPhone

Native apps are coming to the iPhone next month. The iPhone is becoming a platform, but that doesn’t mean the Internet, the greatest platform of all, is going anywhere.  And so, here are the latest webapp additions to the A World of iPhone Links page. I rummage through the hundreds of  iPhone webapps released every month to deliver you only the most choice morsels. All are optimized for use on your iPhone or iPod Touch.

iWhois – Simple domain lookup for the iPhone. Want to register a name like DaringFireball.net? Check to see if it’s taken, or see who owns it.

Moviephone for iPhone – Movie times on your iPhone. Enter your zip code and you can begin browsing by movies near you, theaters near you, top 20 movies, or even movie trailers.

NPR Mobile -  Get NPR news stories, or even listen to the hourly news via a downloadable mp3 that will play in your iPhone’s browser. Awesome for NPR junkies.

Pimp My News – Have the news and your favorite blogs read to you over the Internets. Free your eyeballs from the iPhone’s screen and have content read to you by a pleasant and only sometimes awkward computerized voice. Posts are played in a mp3 file inside your iPhone’s browser. Can be personalized so that news from multiple sites can be read together and turned into your own little podcast.

Powerset Wikipedia search – A search engine for Wikipedia articles that, supposedly, works better than Wikipedia’s own draconian search tool.

Pro Baseball – Baseball scores on your iPhone. Good looking, lots of information. Kind of buggy though–players do no appear in the correct order in box scores.

Yahoo! Maps for iPhone – Use Yahoo! Maps to find the dopest route to your destination. Google Maps is still the best. Double true.

VMODA iPhone with Microphone

*Updated Feb 2009*

Looking to replace your iPhone headphones? Do you also want a pair with a built-in microphone and play/pause/answer features? They may be tougher to find than you think. Third-party headphone makers have been slow to market with their full-featured earphones. Some sell extension-cord dongles that add the microphone/button control to regular earphones. But many people find that solution unsatisfactory. Here’s what your selection looks like right now for full-featured earphones:

iPhone-Optimized Baseball Scores and Stats

*Update 8/9/2009* This post is outdated, as there are now plenty of apps that do a better job of delivering sports scores on the iPhone. Check out Sportacular, our current favorite.

Pickleview featuring MLB ScoresIt’s baseball season again, and we all need a way to get the latest scores and stats on our iPhones. Here are some iPhone- and iPod Touch-optimized ways of getting baseball info. Our featured site is Pickleview, but we’ve also listed our entire collection, so you can choose one that’s right for you.

SmallStarPickleview – Follow your favorite team pitch by pitch. Shows small pictures and stats of players on the base path when they’re at bat or when they reach a base. The bottom of the screen features play-by-play text descriptions, or you can choose to Twitter about the game with your friends.

Others:

ESPN Mobile MLB – Scores and that’s about it. Very limited information.

Live Stats Tracker – Keep track of your fantasy players. One-time set up. Add your individual players, and each time you revisit the site, your players’ latest stats will appear.

MLB.com Mobile – Official site of Major League Baseball in mobile form. Very ugly but offers the most information (particularly, individual stats) of all the links.

Pro Baseball – Baseball scores on your iPhone. Good looking, lots of information, but a little buggy (pitchers currently appear in incorrect order in box scores).

ScoreMobile MLB – Clean interface, but features only scores and limited stats.

SmallStarSportsTap MLB – Scores, stats, standings, and transactions. Displays full box scores. Good looking site.

Yahoo Mobile MLB Scores – News and scores from Yahoo.

There are also a few alternative methods to get baseball scores on your iPhone. One is to send an SMS text message with the words score and Red Sox (or your favorite team) to Google at 46645, and they will send back a score. You can also have Yahoo Alerts send you a text message when a game featuring your favorite team starts, every 3 innings, or when the game ends.
