Review: Photoshop.com Mobile App

The iTunes store has a ton of photo-editing apps, and most do a good job of accomplishing basic tasks. Still, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the new Photoshop.com Mobile app (free, iTunes link), hoping it would provide some advanced features these other apps are lacking. After testing the app, I realize now why its name is so telling — this is a mobile version of Photoshop.com (Adobe’s online photo community), not a mobile version of Photoshop. If you download Photoshop.com Mobile expecting to get even a hint of Photoshop’s prowess, you’re going to be disappointed.

Photoshop.com Mobile has all the basics you’d expect in a photo app, including crop, rotate and flip. Color correction controls include exposure, saturation and tint, and there are sketch and soft-focus effects. To control any of the effects, you slide your finger back and forth over the photo to adjust the color or intensity. If you like what you see, tap the green check mark and the changes are applied.

Like a number of other photo apps, Photoshop.com Mobile also includes various photo filters. Some of these filters are better than others — how often are you going to use ‘rainbow,’ for example?

Other filters, like ‘vibrant’ and ‘white glow’ are actually useful and create very nice effects. These filters in particular help improve a standard iPhone snapshot and make it more interesting.

The filters and effects are easy to use, although there is a tiny lag from when you swipe your finger over the picture to when the effect is applied. It’s best to move your finger slowly to give the app time to respond. Landscape mode is also supported, but it is only is useful if your photo also has a horizontal orientation:

The Photoshop.com Mobile app syncs with Photoshop.com, where users can create free accounts to host and share 2GB of photos. While the Photoshop.com community is nicely implemented and easy to use, I prefer to cut out the middleman and send my photos directly to social networking sites like Twitter or Facebook. That is easy to do using Best Camera, one of my favorite new photo apps. If you don’t already have an online site to store your pictures, Photoshop.com is certainly a good bet and it’s free.

Conclusion

While Photoshop.com Mobile is slick and well designed, I have to admit I was a little disappointed in this app. It doesn’t really set itself apart from any of the other thousand photo apps in the iTunes store, and it doesn’t include anywhere near the functionality of regular Photoshop. The folks at Adobe really missed an opportunity to make this a truly mobile Photoshop by adding just a few of Photoshop’s most-used features — clone stamp or healing brush come to mind.

Still, Photoshop.com Mobile is a free app, so it’s hard to knock it too much. If you don’t already have a photo-editing app, this one will accomplish the basics and do it well; we recommend it for those who just want a simple, easy-to-use photo app. However, if you were hoping for advanced tools or a mobile version of Photoshop, this app will certainly leave you wanting more.

Adobe Releases Free Mobile Photoshop App

The iTunes store is already loaded with photo-editing apps, but Adobe’s new Photoshop.com Mobile app (free, iTunes link) is likely to attract a following from those who rely on Adobe’s industry-leading software.

photoshop1

It’s somewhat surprising that Adobe went the free route with their Photoshop app. After all, you’ll have to fork over $700 for a license to the latest version of Photoshop CS4 software. Of course, Photoshop.com Mobile offers only limited photo-editing functionality, so it’s not going to replace your desktop version. The app includes the basics like crop and rotate, in addition to color correction (exposure, saturation, tint, black & white, etc.) and a variety of photo effects and filters. You can also store up to 2GB of photos at Photoshop.com or email your pics directly from the app.

The app looks pretty solid so far, but can it compete with established apps like Photogene — our favorite photo-editing application for the iPhone? Look for a full review in the future.

Photoshop.com Mobile is a free download at the iTunes store.

App Review: Best Camera

When Chase Jarvis creates an application for the iPhone, it has a little more credibility than your run-of-the-mill photography app. Jarvis is an acclaimed photographer who launched the Best Camera app ($2.99, iTunes link) in conjunction with his book of iPhone photography, ‘The Best Camera is the One That’s With You.’

bestcamera2

Best Camera is a slick app that makes me want to take more pictures with my iPhone. It has two neat features that make it worth a look. First of all, you can easily import pictures from your camera roll — or take pictures directly within the app — and apply creative filters. There are 14 filters to choose from, including color saturation, black & white and other specialized effects created by Jarvis himself.

The filters are easy to work with — simply click one of the 14 filters along the bottom of the app, tap “apply” and you’re done. Some of the filters create very cool effects and transform a quick snapshot into something worth sharing. You can also layer filters to create your own look.

File sharing is another reason why the Best Camera app is worth downloading. The app makes it easy to share your photos via email, Twitter, Facebook or TheBestCamera.com, a website and user community that hosts iPhone photography. Once you are happy with your photo, tap the arrow at the bottom of the page and select where you want to share it. I synced the app with my Facebook account, sent the photo and it was quickly posted to my wall. The app automatically created a photo album on Facebook called ‘Best Cam Photos,’ where it saved all the photos I sent.

The photo filters and file sharing are the main selling points of Best Camera, but you can also view pictures from other users directly in the application. This feature is less exciting than the other two, and I wonder how many people actually use it. Instead of scrolling through the pictures, you have to view a slideshow where one photo flips over at a time. I found it a bit boring and would have preferred to scroll through the pictures at my own speed.

Overall, the Best Camera app is a worthy download and we recommend it if you like to take and share pictures with your iPhone. I have yet to test a photography app that makes it so easy to share your photos online. Serious photographers may find the app a bit limiting, though. These users may prefer the Photogene app, which gives you more control over color correction and file sizing.

Best Camera is a $2.99 download at the iTunes store.

Review: Photogene (Best of iPhone Apps)

Photogene ($2.99, iTunes link) is a photo editing app that was recently featured in the iPhone commercial called “Student.” Photogene offers basic editing tools like cropping and color correction, and it allows you to perform the functions quickly and hassle free. Overall, it’s a polished app with a well-designed interface that works flawlessly on the iPhone. We found it an indespensable tool for anyone who likes to take photos with the iPhone and send them directly from the phone to friends and family.

What’s so special about Photogene is that it’s an introduction to how a touch interface can sometimes be quicker than its mouse-and-keyboard counterpart. Many of the features of the app, such as crop, work just a little bit more economically with your fingers touching the screen.

And the app is no slouch in its feature set. Mac users might even recognize how similar it is to iPhoto’s editing features. The following is a look Photogene‘s feature set (although the developers promise more features will be added over time).

OldBooth Now Has Lite Version (Free iPhone App)

Old Booth for iPhone

OldBooth ($0.99, App Store) is one of my favorite gimmicky iPhone apps. Ever wonder what you would have looked like if you had grown up in the 70s? OldBooth takes faces and adds retro style hair and clothes. The end result is like a bad yearbook photo you wish time had forgotten. You can use pictures taken with the iPhone’s camera (you can take pictures within the app), or use any photo you’ve synched onto the iPhone.

The pay version offers 40 different masks (styles) for both men and women. There is now a lite version that offers only two masks, but we recommend the full version for the most laughs.

OldBooth is a 99-cent download in iTunes App Store.
