Screenshots of Nike+ iPhone App

*Update* AppleInsider is citing “several people familiar with Nike+ initiative” that these screenshots are not from Nike and may be the work of a third-party developer working on a personal project.

French blog iPhon.fr has posted screenshots of what it claims is the upcoming Nike+ app for the iPhone. The Nike+ system has been available for the iPod Nano since summer 2006.

Nike Plus iPhone App for the iPhone

The Nike+ software/hardware combo allows runners to track their workouts, including running distances, times, and calories burned. Runners can create goal-oriented workouts and get audio feedback from the iPod when specific milestones are achieved. Data is stored and can be later downloaded to a computer, then uploaded to the Nike+ website and compared with other runners or for personal workout tracking purposes. The iPhone’s EDGE and 3G connection could remove the need to sync with a computer by directly uploading the data to Nike servers.

The hardware of Nike+ for iPods consists of an accelerometer and a transmitter/receiver. The accelerometer is placed inside the sole of special Nike shoes that come with a built-in pocket. Third-party solutions allow non-Nike shoes to use the device by attaching them to the shoelaces or inside attachable pockets.

The transmitter/receiver is attached to the bottom of the iPod and receives data from the accelerometer. Since the iPhone contains both a transmitter and an accelerometer, it will be interesting to see what hardware will be required for the new software.

The last update to the Nike+ system was the April 2008 introduction of the Sportsband ($59.99), which replaced the need for an iPod Nano.

ESPN Podcenter (iPhone Webapp)

ESPN Podcenter iPhone Webapp

There are still plenty of iPhone webapps that are just as good as any native app. An example is ESPN’s Podcenter. The Podcenter is simply an iPhone-friendly site that lets you listen to all of ESPN’s podcasts. Select any episode, and the mp3 will begin playing in the iPhone’s browser. It even works fine over EDGE if you give it a minute to cache.

Sure, you can subscribe to all of these podcasts in iTunes. But if you’re like me, sometimes you just end up with a bunch of podcasts building up in your library that you rarely listen to. Sometimes, you just want to hear what Mike & Mike are saying about recent news like the Brett Favre trade.

The only downside is that the podcasts are usually a day old, so you’re listening to yesterday’s news. But with a show as entertaining as Pardon the Interruption,  it doesn’t matter much.

Two New Apps for Sports Scores and News

Last week,  two new apps for sports scores and news were added to the iTunes app store: Sportacular and ScoreMobile. Here’s a look at both, along with an opinion on which is the best.

Sportacular

Sportacular iPhone app

Sportstacular is my favorite of the two new apps. It offers live scores, standings, news, box scores, game plays, and the ability to track the stats of individual players.

For live baseball scores, Sportacular shows a graphic displaying who’s on base, the pitcher and batter, ball and strike count, number of outs, a traditional 9-inning scoreboard, as well as a box score and a list of game plays. Scores automatically refresh every 30 seconds.

Sportacular iPhone Native App

Box scores are presented in a split view, showing the stats of only one team per page. I’m not sure why this has become the norm for iPhone apps (both native and web). I’d like to see a full box score on only one page.

The news page looks like an RSS feed, with a headline and brief summary of the article. Tapping on the article opens up the article’s website within the app (the news comes from third-party sites like ESPN, Fox Sports, etc). This is a nice feature as it doesn’t take you to Mobile Safari then force you to navigate back to the app.

Sportacular News View

Sportacular also makes it easy to follow your fantasy players. Specific players can be added to a customizable page. This allows you to easily check your fantasy players’ performances.

ScoreMobile

ScoreMobile iPhone App

ScoreMobile has a more simple approach than Sportacular, focusing on scores. The app features live scoreboard, box scores, and a writeup of games that have ended, but no news or individual player tracking.

ScoreMobile also features the Vegas line of upcoming games for the sports betting enthusiast.

SportsTap: Live Baseball Scores on the iPhone (Free App)

MLB Baseball Scores with Sports Tap

SportsTap is a free iPhone app that provides live baseball scores on your iPhone. It also features scores and news from several other major sports as well.  SportsTap features full box scores, play-by-play, scoring summary, and even the day’s transactions from around the league. SportsTap is a free iPhone app available for download in the iTunes app store.

There are also several iPhone-friendly websites that provide live baseball scores (links to all can be found here), but besides the$5 MLB At Bat, SportsTap is currently the best solution.

Update to the A World of iPhone Links Page

Art of the iPhone

Native apps are coming to the iPhone next month. The iPhone is becoming a platform, but that doesn’t mean the Internet, the greatest platform of all, is going anywhere.  And so, here are the latest webapp additions to the A World of iPhone Links page. I rummage through the hundreds of  iPhone webapps released every month to deliver you only the most choice morsels. All are optimized for use on your iPhone or iPod Touch.

iWhois - Simple domain lookup for the iPhone. Want to register a name like DaringFireball.net? Check to see if it’s taken, or see who owns it.

Moviephone for iPhone - Movie times on your iPhone. Enter your zip code and you can begin browsing by movies near you, theaters near you, top 20 movies, or even movie trailers.

NPR Mobile -  Get NPR news stories, or even listen to the hourly news via a downloadable mp3 that will play in your iPhone’s browser. Awesome for NPR junkies.

Pimp My News - Have the news and your favorite blogs read to you over the Internets. Free your eyeballs from the iPhone’s screen and have content read to you by a pleasant and only sometimes awkward computerized voice. Posts are played in a mp3 file inside your iPhone’s browser. Can be personalized so that news from multiple sites can be read together and turned into your own little podcast.

Powerset Wikipedia search - A search engine for Wikipedia articles that, supposedly, works better than Wikipedia’s own draconian search tool.

Pro Baseball - Baseball scores on your iPhone. Good looking, lots of information. Kind of buggy though–players do no appear in the correct order in box scores.

Yahoo! Maps for iPhone - Use Yahoo! Maps to find the dopest route to your destination. Google Maps is still the best. Double true.
