iPhone iNetwork Speed Test

The iNetwork Test for iPhone is a very basic test of your iPhone’s download speeds. It measures your iPhone’s speed when you download a small graphic on the site’s webpage. Your speed will be shown, then you can choose to report how you’re connected (EDGE, 3G, WiFi), then check out what the global average speeds have been the last seven days. Click here for link to iNetwork (or click on image above).

iPhone Wallpaper Site for the Ladies

Life Is Colorful iPhone Wallpaper

For female iPhone owners, it can be tough to find the right wallpaper amongst a plethora of pictures of Megan Fox and sports cars. PixelGirlPresents.com is a cool girl-centric wallpaper website. The wallpapers are not exclusive to the iPhone though, there are desktop wallpapers as well. Although the site is girl-centric, there are other cool bizarre, hip, and artsy styles that make it worth flipping through if you’re guy too.

Update to the A World of iPhone Links Page

Art of the iPhone

Native apps are coming to the iPhone next month. The iPhone is becoming a platform, but that doesn’t mean the Internet, the greatest platform of all, is going anywhere.  And so, here are the latest webapp additions to the A World of iPhone Links page. I rummage through the hundreds of  iPhone webapps released every month to deliver you only the most choice morsels. All are optimized for use on your iPhone or iPod Touch.

iWhois – Simple domain lookup for the iPhone. Want to register a name like DaringFireball.net? Check to see if it’s taken, or see who owns it.

Moviephone for iPhone – Movie times on your iPhone. Enter your zip code and you can begin browsing by movies near you, theaters near you, top 20 movies, or even movie trailers.

NPR Mobile -  Get NPR news stories, or even listen to the hourly news via a downloadable mp3 that will play in your iPhone’s browser. Awesome for NPR junkies.

Pimp My News – Have the news and your favorite blogs read to you over the Internets. Free your eyeballs from the iPhone’s screen and have content read to you by a pleasant and only sometimes awkward computerized voice. Posts are played in a mp3 file inside your iPhone’s browser. Can be personalized so that news from multiple sites can be read together and turned into your own little podcast.

Powerset Wikipedia search – A search engine for Wikipedia articles that, supposedly, works better than Wikipedia’s own draconian search tool.

Pro Baseball – Baseball scores on your iPhone. Good looking, lots of information. Kind of buggy though–players do no appear in the correct order in box scores.

Yahoo! Maps for iPhone – Use Yahoo! Maps to find the dopest route to your destination. Google Maps is still the best. Double true.

Art of the iPhone

AOL Horoscopes – iPhone-optimized horoscopes. Interface is very quick and clean.

Time to Update Your Google Reader for iPhone Bookmark

New Google Reader for the iPhone - In Beta

Our favorite iPhone-optimized RSS reader, Google Reader, just got a nice update. The first thing you have to know is that it has a new address. Because it’s still in beta, it’s not currently the default Reader that shows up when you navigate to reader.google.com. So, it’s time to tap some glass. The new address is:

http://www.google.com/reader/i/

*Update* Going to the normal Google Reader address on your iPhone now takes you to the mobile version by default.

The coolest feature is that each story now expands on the same page–there is no more navigating to another view to read the story and then hitting the back button to go back to the list view. Now, you tap to expand the story, then tap to contract when your finished reading.

Also, now the stars show up right next to the story and are much more easily selected. This is much easier than the old method, which required journeying to the end of the article and selecting a tiny star at the bottom of the screen.

New Star Method for Google Reader iPhone Version

New placement for stars.

Old Star Selection Method for Google Reader for the iPhone

Previous method for starring an article. Yuck.

Another update is that they have removed the Tags link. There now only two selections at the top of the landing page: Feeds and Refresh. In fact, it appears the ability to view your tagged articles has completely disappeared.

Tags for Google Reader for the iPhone Have Gone Bye Bye

Tags go to the land of no return

Regular Google Reader (for the regular Internets) also recently added the Notes feature. You can now view those notes on your iPhone along with the original source material in the Feeds view. However, you can’t write notes for stories on your iPhone. Durn it.

Google Reader for iPhone Bookmark IconI highly recommend using Google Reader on your iPhone. If you aren’t using an RSS reader to read websites you frequent, it’s time to start, especially with your iPhone. Even with the smaller loading times 3G will bring, it can save you lots of time by bringing all your news sources into one place. And the iPhone-optimized auto- formatting makes reading much, much more pleasant. Thanks again to the Google Reader team for keeping up the hustle. Glad to see they are big iPhone users as well. They also have a version optimized for the Nintendo Wii that utilizes the Wiimote’s unique functionality.

Muxtape: Share Your Mixtape, Listen on Your iPhone

Muxtape.com for the iPhoneEver created a mixtape to introduce new artists to your friends? Muxtape.com is one of those beautiful minimalist websites that makes it very simple to share a mixtape of your favorite songs.

Muxtape lists are playable on the iPhone. The site streams mp3s, so a strong Internet connection is recommended. Muxtape also offers RSS feeds for your  mixtapes, so when songs are added, friends can be notified if they are subscribed.

The question you’re probably asking is: Is this legal? Well, here are Muxtape’s terms of service:

Muxtape is a service for creating mixtapes. Users may not upload multiple songs from the same album or artist, or songs they do not have permission to let Muxtape use. Individual users may not create multiple muxtapes. Accounts not meeting these restrictions are subject to termination without notice. Muxtape will never reveal your email address to a third party. Muxtape is alive.

For an example of a Muxtape, check out Art of the iPhone‘s Muxtape, or Digg.com founder Kevin Rose’s, or just head on over to Muxtape.com and start discovering and creating your own.
