Target Black Friday Deals for iPhone Owners

With less than two weeks to go until Black Friday, we’re starting to get a good sense of what deals we can expect on the best (and craziest) shopping day of the year. For iPhone owners at least, Target is somewhat of a disappointment this year. Few iPhone accessories are included in their Black Friday circular, although there are some decent deals for iPod touch fans (or those who want to give it as a gift this year).

Three-Slot Charging Station

Three slot charging station

Target is offering a three-slot charging station, normally $29.99, for $14.99. The charging station includes a power cord and comes in brown or black. It keeps your electronic gadgets — including the iPhone — organized while charging.

Bottom Line: Good deal. The design may not please everyone, but it is a charging station for half off. It could be a good gift for the gadget person in your life who has way too many cords.

Memorex Home Audio System for iPod

memorexShopping for someone with an iPod touch? For Black Friday, Target is slashing the price on the Memorex Home Audio System from $99 to $49.99. The Memorex speaker system includes a CD player, integrated subwoofer, AM/FM radio and a remote. It’s compatible with the iPod touch and most other iPod models. It does have a line-in jack to attach other music devices (like the iPhone), but it’s not ‘Works with iPhone’ certified, so you could still hear some GSM buzz unless you put the phone into airplane mode.

Bottom line: Decent deal. You can’t beat saving $50 bucks, but there are few complaints about sound quality at Target.com.

$25 iTunes Gift Card

25 itunes gift card

Target’s Black Friday sale will also include $25 iTunes gift cards for $20. As we mentioned in our post on Best Buy Black Friday deals, these make great stocking stuffers for iPhone and iPod owners.

Bottom line: Great deal. It’s always nice to save some money on gift cards, so stock up at Target on Black Friday.

32GB iPod touch

iPod Touch

Target is also offering the latest generation 32GB iPod touch for $295.99, plus a $30 giftcard. The popular iPod touch is a great holiday gift and the new version is apparently faster than previous generations.

Bottom line: Decent deal. Target.com is currently selling the 32GB iPod touch for $278.67 (a 6% discount) for a limited time. On Black Friday, you won’t get a discount but you’ll get the $30 gift card, so you’re essentially getting the touch for $265. So you can save $13 on Black Friday or just get the iPod touch now and skip the crowds after Thanksgiving.

Target stores plan to open at 5 a.m. on Black Friday. Shoppers will also get a $10 giftcard if you spend over $100 between 5 a.m. and noon on Black Friday. For more Black Friday deals, check out our posts on Best Buy and Office Depot.

Developer Spends $600k on Developing an iPhone App, Still Not Approved After 6 Months

CEO Eric Thomas with interviewer.

CEO Eric Thomas with interviewer.

Wired.com has published an article about a company called FreedomVoice Systems who says they have spent over $600,000 on developing and marketing an unreleased iPhone app called Newber, and for 6 months Apple has not approved or rejected the app.

We followed all guidelines set by Apple throughout the development process and have never received comment from Apple as to why the Newber application has still not even been reviewed. Steve Jobs hailed the App Store as, ‘the best deal going to distribute applications to mobile platforms.’ Our experience is that it is the worst deal going.

If approved, Newber would be an iPhone-only app that lets you transfer phone calls to other phones, for example, from the iPhone to an office phone. CEO Eric Thomas said his company had taken extraordinary measures to get in contact with Apple about the status of their app, even calling from different phone numbers just to get through, but so far nothing has worked.

We just want to get Apple to have the social conscience to have a conversation,” Thomas said. “They can even tell me no.”

I’ve got even worse news coming for the company: Google will soon release a new product called Google Voice that will offer the same functionality for free without the need for an iPhone app.

Apple will hold an event at 10:00am pst next Tuesday, March 17, to offer a preview of the next iPhone 3.0 software. The event will be held at the Apple Town Hall with select journalists attending. It will be Apple’s first public event since Steve Jobs took medical leave in January.

Apple will supply developers with a new SDK as well as brief them on upcoming changes and new features as well as delivering a blueprint for the iPhone’s near future. A similar event was held last year for the iPhone 2.0 software that saw the release of a new development kit and the introduction of Enterprise features such as remote wipe via Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync.

Etymotic hf2 iPhone and iPod Touch earphones

The new Etymotic hf2 noise-isolating earphones ($179) are now available. The earphones feature a microphone and play-pause button like the original iPhone headphones.

The earphones have a 4 ft. cable and come with assorted eartips along with a filter tool with 2 replacements and a storage pouch. They work with both the original iPhone and the 3G, as well as the Blackberry Curve and other devices with a 3.5-mm 4-contact phone and stereo plug (like the newest iPod Touch and Nano).

Etymotic hf2 in Ruby Red

Etymotic claims the hf2s have the same audio response as their well-reviewed Etymotic ER-4 earphones. About.com’s Home Recording review blog gave the ER-4s 4 out of 5 stars and had this to say:

The Etymotic ER-4 earphones has become one of the most talked about earphones for accurate sound reproduction. A favorite of many sound engineers and artists for both on-stage and off-stage monitoring, the Etymotic design – and the research that went into it – is the basis for most in-ear monitoring options today. These earphones are true audiophile quality; and with the optional ER-4p to ER-4s converter, they can be used with professional-grade headphone amplifiers for even greater quality.

Updated: New Apple In-Ear Headphones With Microphone Are Compatible With iPhone (Sort of)

New iPod In-Ear Headphones Inside CaseNew iPod in-Ear Earphones With Microphone and Remote

Apple introduced their own in-ear headphones ($79.00) with built-in microphone and remote control for the new iPod Nano, Touch, and Classic. The three new iPod models all support voice recording when a microphone is detected, hence the microphone on the new earphones. The earphones also feature volume control.

*Update* It appears Apple won’t officially claim the headphones are iPhone supported because the volume control of the headphones won’t work with the iPhone. However, it appears the microphone and the remote features do work with the iPhone. Old iPhone headphones will work with the new iPods.

*Update II* Check out our review of the Apple In-Ear Headphones.

The price point is really good for sound isolating headphones, especially ones with a tweeter and woofer for each ear. We’ve noted before that choices are still slim for iPhone headphones with full microphone/remote functionality.

The headphones feature two independent sound drivers: a woofer and a tweeter. Also included are three sizes of silicon ear tips and a carrying case to wrap the headphones around.

But if my guess is any good, iPhone users shouldn’t have to fret too long until they get their own iPhone version (with volume control). Remember, patience is a virtue.

How to Delete Multiple Emails at Once on the iPhone

Lost in the hype of the new iPhone 3G and avalanche of new apps is a basic feature upgrade to iPhone’s email app: the ability to delete multiple emails at the same time. This one was a long time coming.

So how do you do it? While viewing your Inbox or any other email folder, just tap the Edit button in the top right corner of the screen.

Deleting Multiple Emails With the iPhone

Next, you’ll see small circles appear on the left of each email. Tap any emails you want to delete, the circles will fill in with red. Then, hit the delete button on the bottom left corner.

Delete iPhone 3G Email Messages Multiple

Hold on a second though, like most email clients, your email hasn’t been truly deleted. They’ve been sent to the Trash folder. To truly delete them, you can navigate to the Trash folder, then select Delete All. If you don’t do this, the iPhone will automatically delete the emails after a period of time. The default setting is one week, but you can change that in the iPhone’s Settings. In Settings, navigate to the mail settings, then the email account you want to change.  Select the Advanced tab, and you’ll see Deleted Messages in the middle of the page. Select your deletion frequency, and you’re all set.
