Reuters is reporting that Apple and iBiquity Digital Corp are offering a free service called “iTunes Tagging,” which essentially lets you locate songs in iTunes Music Store that you hear on an FM HD radio channel and purchase them.
The big question is whether any current Apple product, like the iPhone or iPod Touch, can receive FM HD radio. The chip inside the iPhone is the Infineon S-Gold2, which, according to its spec sheet, offers “connectivity to Bluetooth, FM Radio, WLAN, A-GPS and other modules.” There is also evidence in the iPhone’s firmware that Apple has some sort of radio functionality in store for the iPhone.
This could create a scenario where any iPhone owner near a wifi connection and listening to HD Radio could download the song they’re listening to. That could be a very powerful revenue source for record companies, as it involves impulsive, time-limited purchases (”I better buy before the song is over!”).
