Review: Tiger Woods PGA Tour

IMG_0279

Okay, I know, Tiger Woods is in the news, what with the marital infidelity allegations and all, but I promise, I’ll try and avoid double entendres, and jokes about handling wood. Cross my heart.

Anyway, Tiger Woods PGA Tour ($4.99, iTunes link) is made by publishing powerhouse EA—so it has all the premium production values, excellent graphics, and full feature set you’d expect.

The learning curve of the game is surprisingly tough. Each shot and each course presents you with a brutal amount of information to consider. You have to worry about the hole’s par, the type of grass you’re hitting from, windspeed, club type, obstacles, swing strength, spin, etc.

To aid you, there is a set of tutorials, but they’re tucked away in the menu system and not presented automatically. Putting is even tougher to get a handle of, but once you understand the undulating grid that shows the lay of the course—and its repercussions—you can easily sink hilariously long putts. We’d have liked to see a little more realism.

Game Review: Let’s Golf

Gameloft is quickly becoming a premiere iPhone game developer, and Let’s Golf ($5.99, iTunes link) is a prime example of their skill at creating quality games. Let’s Golf is a cartoonish golf game that takes an accessible approach to the sport while leaving just enough advanced gameplay to keep things challenging. More impressive is that somehow they’ve managed to successfully create an uptempo game in what’s usually a slow-paced sport. Overall, it’s one of the best sports games we’ve played on the iPhone yet, and we are rating it an 8.0 out of 10, highly recommended.

One of Let’s Golf’s strongest features is the control scheme. The controls are accurate and easy to use and make the game instantly playable even for those who have never swung a golf club. Tap once to start your swing, tap a second time to set your power, and tap a third time to determine your accuracy. The game aids you by showing lines for suggested power and accuracy, which is very helpful for beginners, although it should be noted that the game-suggested power often results in drives about 10 yards too long.
